Licensed Amateur Since: September 10, 2001
SKYWARN Team Member Since: June 5, 2002
Joined Amateur Radio Team: July 1, 2008
Enjoys: 40m, QRP, and PSK31

As Amateur Radio Coordinator, Steve is responsible for overseeing all aspects of amateur radio's involvement with the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Wakefield and works with the Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) and the SKYWARN Outreach Team to ensure the communications needs of the office are being met.

The Amateur Radio Coordinator closely monitors a vast array of products from the Weather Forecast Office (WFO), Storm Prediction Center (SPC), National Hurricane Center (NHC), National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (HPC), and several military and commercial sources. Decisions to place the amateur radio team on standby are made based on these products and communication with NWS staff.

Steve helped form the Wakefield SKYWARN Amateur Radio Support Team in July 2008 and also manages the entire IT infrastructure for the amateur radio team.

When he's not working on SKYWARN projects, he's probably pursuing other amateur radio interests:

  • Member of the Richmond (VA) Amateur Telecommunications Society (RATS).
  • ARES Official Emergency Station (OES) - SKYWARN Liaison.
  • Secretary of the VDEM Amateur Radio Communications Auxiliary (VDEM-ARCA).
  • Medical Communications Coordinator for the Virginia Special Olympics Summer Games.
  • Member of the Flying Pigs QRP Club International.

With all of that on his plate, plus a full-time job supporting the IT needs of 18 retail stores, in those rare moments when there's any leftover time he enjoys the study of supermarket history and architecture. He is a 1998 graduate of Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, Virginia.
